BERRUGATE island is located in Guanacaste Province, a zone of greater attraction and tourist development of Costa Rica. The Guanacaste coastal region has tourist developments of first category that offer lodging, food and high quality amusement services. Nevertheless up to now there is not an attractive development with an island as attractive.
It is important to note that President of Costa Rica has affirmed that one of the three priorities of its government is to support tourism. This position has lead to the denominated "2002-2010 Sustainable Tourism Development Plan". This politic compromise has as a purpose to benefit, to attract and to improve the conditions for the tourist investment in the country which is a world leader in ecotourism.

The National Geographic Institute according to its competence and based on Pronouncement C-038-97 from March 12, 1997 issued by the Republic General Prosecutor, ESTABLISHED THAT THE ISLAND BERRUGATE IS A CONTINENTAL ISLAND. Due to this "DICTAMEN" many bureaucratic transaction are excluded, facilitating those procedures required in Costa Rica for promoting any development in this island.

Approach to the Island

From San Jose, capital of Costa Rica, by land the route follows the North Interamerican. Highway until Limonal in Guanacaste. On this point, it turns to the left to follow the way going to the Tempisque River Path, and continues to San Pablo de Nandayure and "Puerto Thiel", which is a small artisan port. Boarding a small ship in this harbor the trip lasts 20 minutes to reach the island. The total trip from San José to the island by this route is approximately 300 kilometers in length. There are other options to arrive to the Island, but till this moment we believe that this is the most recommendable alternative.

EXTENSION AND TOPOGRAPHY

The island has approximately an extension of 600 hectares (1,500 acres). It has irregular topography which may be divided into two sectors:

Mangroves and Natural Canals

It is a beautiful area of abundant marine life composed by mangroves and natural canals, which represents a 50 % of the total area of the island. The mangrove constitutes an ecosystem that dominates the West Side of the island. It has a dense cover, with trees and shrubs which are typical of marine-terrestrial interchange soils, of an extraordinary and charming beauty for those of us who love nature.

High Lands

The most elevated area (50%) of the Island ranges from altitudes from 3 meters to 166 meters above the sea level on the highest hill, named "Cerro Berrugate". It has many hills and small valleys that would permit the construction of a golf camp and even an airport for small planes may be constructed. Likewise there are sites with conditions to place marine facilities because they have appropriated profundities and areas protected against the wind. This sector houses interesting flora and fauna where there are different species of trees and shrubs, birds, monkeys, iguanas and butterflies.
Bordering waters are rich in fishes and mollusks, due to this factor small ships performing artesian fishing activities may be frequently observed.

Water

The island has small intermittent rivulets, which go down their levels depending on the amount of rain during the year. Artesian wells were excavated in the past; they provided permanently an abundant volume of water. For this reason it can be indicated there is abundant sweet water in the island subsoil.

Climate

The climate is dry humid and warm. The annual average precipitation is 1,747 mm. There are two seasons during the year: rainy season and dry season, each one lasts 6 months. Even during the rainy season the sun shines all the time.
