Within Havelock North’s Te Mata Special Character Zone we are privileged to offer for sale the landmark Hawkes Bay winery, vineyard and restaurant Bradshaw Estate, together with the owner’s residence, a heritage building of architectural and historical interest in its own right.
Bradshaw Estate has a commanding position on the edge of Havelock North within the heart of the winery and Te Mata Special Character Zone. It is renowned for its iconic Mediterranean design winery and restaurant with its wonderful rural vistas over its vineyard overlooking its vineyard and the unspoiled countryside beyond. Bradshaw’s have produced award winning wines over the years and its equally well regarded restaurant has become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Apart from the regular winery and restaurant business Bradshaw Estate enjoys a well patronised and profitable wedding and function trade.
The location Te Mata Road has long been recognised for its potential to produce the finest wine grapes and wine. In 1895 an Italian viticulturist, Romeo Bragato, travelled through the country visiting Te Mata on the way, looking at viticulture prospects. He is recorded as stating that the area “would make wine of the finest quality”. In 1892 the first Te Mata Road vineyard was developed by pioneering farmer Bernard Chambers and is now the site of the closely neighbouring and internationally famous Te Mata Estate Winery.
Bradshaw Estate itself comprises a total of 4 hectares sited on the original Vidal's No.1 vineyard established in 1936. The vineyard was completely replanted to Sauvignon Blanc vines during the 1980's and in 1991. The present winery and restaurant was constructed in 1996.
The winery and restaurant was constructed in Mediterranean style complimenting the Spanish Mission architectural style commonly adopted within Hawkes Bay in the early 20th century. It stands on the side of Te Mata Road and is ideally sited to give visitors and diners wonderful elevated rural vistas over the vineyard with the plains, sea and mountains beyond. The two level building total 571 m² in size. The ground floor has a further 90 m² of outdoor dining terrace and on the top level is a 27 m² balcony. The building has a pleasant solid plaster exterior over timber construction and a tiled roof.
Inside on the east side of the building is a substantial dining room and bar serviced by a restaurant kitchen with walk in cool-store and food storage area. The dining room opens through sets of double doors open to a further large pergola covered dining terrace. From both areas diners share the ambience of dining overlooking the vineyard and countryside. The lower level of centre of the building comprises a spacious dedicated wine sales and tasting area and wine laboratory. On the east side is the winery - tank room. Upstairs in the building is a spacious conference room as well as office-administration space.
Sited adjacent to the winery, the separate two storey owner’s residence was designed by renowned local architect William Rush as the local farm managers residence and constructed in 1912 using the attractive traditional Hawkes Bay “pebble dash” solid plaster exterior finish. This is a lovely home with considerable character and charm enjoying same lovely vineyard and rural vistas as does the winery – restaurant. The home which was recently renovated and modernised has four bedrooms, a modern kitchen and generous living space. Total living space is 238 m² plus the first floor balcony and lower level patio areas. Double garaging and storage of similar design was recently constructed adjacent to the house. The home has considerable potential not only as a new owner’s residence but for immediate application as superior, up-market tourist accommodation for which there is considerable demand in this area.
